As females, we all have a personal connection to our issue of women's health (in regard to feminine hygiene especially), but because we are all the same age and position in the Austin High community, it was important for us to get another perspective. Our initial intention had been to see if we could talk to the school nurse about her take on the issue, but because the nurse is not an employee of Austin ISD (rather, Seton), we turned towards Sherri Patton-Grubb, the Licensed Mental Health Professional and the staff member whose job involves getting students the resources they need and who has the most contact with the homeless population at Austin High. Ms. Patton-Grubb encouraged us to speak with the school nurse in regard to the need for these resources but offered her assistance following our acquisition of feminine hygiene products. In a brief follow-up with the nurse, we learned that the money to fund feminine hygiene products came from a general health fund for the nurse's office and when products were offered, girls would come in at least 10 times a day. We hope to speak with Ms. Griffith to find out if she knows how funds are distributed for health goods and services in school or if she knows someone who will know.
